Unless you've been living under a rock, ChatGPT is all over everyone's social media feed. ChatGPT-3 has been released to public on November 13, 2022 to get public feedback. Since then, people can't stop praising the prowess of ChatGPT-3.
What is ChagGPT?
ChatGPT-3 (version 3) is a chatbot introduced by OpenAI to answer questions in long-form. The beauty of ChatGPT-3 is that it answers complex questions in a conversational way. You can (almost) literally have a text conversation as you would have with another human. This is brilliant for inquisitve but also lonely souls.
Chat GPT-3 is a critical development in AI as it is trained to answer questions on what humans "mean". Chatbots have long relied on the user structuring specific pre-defined questions. By answering quesitons in a conversational way without specific structuring requirement, Chat-GPT takes a leap forward in entrenching itself in human lives.

Tech details:
Chat GPT-3 is a large language model (LLM) trained with masssive amounts of data. Because of this increase in the parameters, GPT-3 is able to perform tasks it was not explicity trained on, like translating sentences with few to no training examples.
According to Stanford University,
GPT-3 has 175 billion parameters and was trained on 570 gigabytes of text. It's predecessor is 100 times smaller at 1.5 bilion parameters.
GPT-3 model is trained with Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). AI models are trained with Reinforcement Learning with incentivisation methodology. RLHF adds Humand Feedback to RL training to improve the quality of the response and make it have"human-like" conversation.
About OpenAI:
OpenAI is a research laboratory consisting of two companies. Parent company is the non-profit Open AI Inc. and the subsidiary OpenAI LP, a for-profit company.
CEO and co-founder, Sam Altman, heads the company today. The company is founded in December 2015 by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Reid Hoffman, Jessica Livingston, Petter Thiel, AWS, Infosys, YC Research and Greg Brockman - who collectively pledged $1bn for AI research and open collaboration. Elon Musk resinged in 2018 citing future potential conflicts with Tesla AI.
Business details:
In 2019, OpenAI created OpenAI LP, the for-profit company with a capped-profit of 100-fold the original investment. Shortly after, Microsoft injected $1 billion into the company. This allows Microsoft to commercailise part of the tech OpenAI creates.
Now, what's everyone hyped about. It's not just the prowess of ChatGPT, but also how this could spell the beginning of search (Google) as we know it. For 20 years, Google has dominated search. Now if you can ask a question and get the answer, why would you need Google results, and advertisements. This threatens almost 90% of Google's profits. Supposedly, this has created Code Red in Google's Mountain View HQ.
OpenAI, with its special relationship with Microsoft, can definitely be a worthwhile challenger to Google. Just like many Google projects, Google's potential competitor to OpenAI ChatGPT called LaMDA is not yet open for public and is therefore only Google can compare as of today. We will need to wait, and track, how this evolves.
The news of ChatGPT does not go without controversies, particularly focused on ethics.
