According to Space Daily, Look Up Space has reported a significant milestone in space history, with over 10,000 active satellites now in orbit as of June 19, 2024. The count reached 10,019 active satellites, with approximately two-thirds, or 6,646, belonging to SpaceX's Starlink constellation. Most of these satellites are positioned in low-Earth orbits, primarily between 400 and 1,200 kilometers above the Earth. In addition to satellites, Look Up Space tracks nearly 3,200 rocket stages and 13,326 pieces of orbital debris. However, this debris represents only a small fraction of the estimated one million pieces measuring a centimeter or more that are currently in orbit. The company utilizes its SYNAPSE data fusion platform to detect collision risks, identifying nearly a thousand potential collisions daily with a probability greater than one in a million, and between 50 and 100 risks with a probability greater than one in 100,000. This data underscores the increasing vulnerability of space to collisions, prompting concerns about when a significant collision might occur. Look Up Space aims to enhance the safety and sustainability of space through a global radar network designed to track objects in orbit. The company, founded in 2022 by Michel Friedling and Juan Carlos Dolado, provides real-time debris mapping to satellite operators and governments to mitigate collision risks.
