U.S. cultivated seafood pioneer BlueNalu, based in San Diego, California, has raised approximately $11 million in new convertible note and preferred stock financings to scale up production and support the commercialisation of its highly anticipated cultivated bluefin tuna toro a premium sushi-grade product that could transform sustainable seafood offerings worldwide. The investment comes as the startup advances toward regulatory approval and broader market launch following years of technology development in the alternative protein space. The financing round was led by key existing investors including Agronomics, Siddhi Capital, and Lewis & Clark AgriFood, with participation from roughly 40 other current backers, underscoring continued confidence from strategic partners in BlueNalu’s differentiated approach to cultivated seafood production. The latest capital boost brings the company’s total funding to approximately $129 million and will support process optimisation, production scale-up and preparations for entry into premium foodservice markets once regulatory approvals are in place. BlueNalu operates multiple facilities in San Diego - one dedicated to core R&D and bioprocessing, and another 38,000 sq ft site focused on technology transfer, initial commercialisation and pilot manufacturing. The company has also laid plans for a much larger, 140,000 sq ft commercial-scale facility capable of producing millions of pounds of product annually once it begins operations. These facilities are key to readying BlueNalu for broader market entry. The startup has already filed a regulatory dossier with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is awaiting a “no questions” regulatory outcome that would allow it to begin selling cultivated tuna toro domestically - a milestone that would follow Wildtype’s earlier commercialised cultivated salmon. Internationally, BlueNalu is engaging with regulatory bodies in Singapore, the UK, Saudi Arabia, Japan, South Korea and the European Union to pursue parallel approvals and global expansion.
