Cellares, a California-based leader in automated cell and gene therapy manufacturing, has secured $257 million in a Series D funding round to accelerate the build-out of its high-tech, integrated smart factories and prepare for commercial-scale cell therapy production starting in 2027. The company’s advanced automation platforms aim to overcome long-standing capacity and cost barriers in personalised cell therapy manufacturing a space poised for significant growth as engineered cell therapies move from clinical to commercial use. This funding round was co-led by BlackRock and Eclipse, and included participation from T. Rowe Price, Baillie Gifford, Gates Frontier, Duquesne Family Office, Intuitive Ventures, and EDBI, alongside existing backers such as DC Global Ventures, DFJ Growth, and Willett Advisors. The fresh capital will support Cellares’ global expansion with new facilities across Europe and Japan adding to its U.S. presence in South San Francisco and New Jersey and fund the deployment of automated platforms like Cell Shuttle and Cell Q that enable end-to-end manufacturing and testing of cell therapies at scale.
