In the first half of 2025, the U.S. venture capital landscape revealed a stark divide, with just 12 firms securing over 50% of all venture capital raised, according to PitchBook’s analysis. This concentration underscores a growing trend where elite, multi-strategy firms dominate fundraising, while smaller and first-time fund managers face significant hurdles.
Leading the pack, Founders Fund, co-founded by Peter Thiel, raised an impressive $4.6 billion in new funds, surpassing the combined total of $1.8 billion raised by 44 first-time fund managers, as reported in the Q2 2025 PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor. The top 30 firms accounted for 74% of the total capital raised, highlighting the bifurcation between large, established players and smaller, boutique funds.
The fundraising environment remains challenging, particularly for new entrants. The median time to raise a venture fund hit a record 15.3 months in 2025, per the PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor, reflecting prolonged fundraising timelines. Limited partners (LPs), still overexposed to venture capital due to limited exits over the past two years, are cautious about new commitments, especially to first-time managers.
Meanwhile, major players are poised for an even busier second half. Reports indicate that Andreessen Horowitz is in discussions to raise a fund potentially as large as $20 billion, with Khosla Ventures and Menlo Ventures also planning multi-billion-dollar funds, according to the Financial Times. This activity signals continued momentum for the industry’s heavyweights.
However, not all is rosy for the venture ecosystem. Even established firms face challenges, as seen with partners like Sequoia’s Matt Miller and NEA’s Vanessa Larco launching their own ventures. These moves reflect confidence in new opportunities but also highlight the difficulty of securing LP support in a market where distributions remain low.
